If you need general interview help or are unsure how to interview well, go there.But spending the whole interview thinking whether youre being discriminated against is going to KILL your interview performance.(Worrying or being preoccupied with anything else would do the same).And the truth is there are a lot of reasons you may not get a job offer from the interview.Its hard to know. A lot of people email me saying theyre sure they were discriminated against because of age, but they dont have any evidence.Ill talk about when to contact a lawyer in an upcoming section in this article.But its important to realize that employers choose to hire someone based on so many factors how much money youll require, experience, personality, even gender.(For example, Ive had hiring managers tell me they only want to hire a woman for a role, because the team has too many men).So its qu ite possible to do a TON of things well in an interview and still not get hired whether youre 20 years old or 60 years old.Youre competing against a lot of people and you dont even get to see those people usually. Its impossible to know everything that went into each hiring decision.All you can do is focus on the pieces YOU can control your interview preparation, how you answer their questions, etc. STOP Thinking About Age in Your Interviews!The bottom line is: If youre always thinking about your age, then youll always be thinking that a failed interview was about your age.I know age discrimination happens, and its awful.But while you may feel your past five interviews went poorly due to age discrimination, it might be the case that two employers discriminated against you, and the other three chose to hire somebody else for an entirely different reason.Thats why its important to focus on your interview skills, and the things you can control!When to Contact an Employment LawyerIf yo u feel you have real evidence youve been discriminated against, it may be time to talk to an employment lawyer who specializes in discrimination cases.Im not a legal expert so its up to you and them to discuss whether you have a case.Id search google for Employment Lawyer City Name.But as mentioned above, Id really recommend focusing on your interview preparation and how youre selling yourself to employers.This is the piece you can control, and is the best way to overcome age discrimination in your interviews (because if you apply for jobs consistently, you WILL find employers who dont discriminate and do value your skill set, but you need to be ready to impress them in the interview).What Else Can You Do to Stop Age Discrimination When Job Searching?Beyond what Ive shared above, here are a few more ways you can improve your chances of getting hired and avoiding age discrimination when job searching:First, apply for a lot of jobs.Even if some employers discriminate, some dont. You n eed to find them. And applying for two or three jobs and then stopping isnt going to make that happen.So use volume to your advantage.And dont give up!  Take a break if you need to, but then come back and continue searching!Only you can control whether you give up or not. Dont let this happen. You decide when youve failed; nobody else.Also, research employers on LinkedIn and try to get a sense of their age demographic before applying.Spend your time and effort applying to companies who seem to hire people in their 40s and 50s, not just in their 20s.One more tip:Use your network as much as possible. In a past article, I wrote about why networking is the best/fastest way to get a job.Employers will trust you more and be likely to interview you immediately if someone they know recommends you.So make sure youre talking to your network and seeing if they can introduce you to any employers they know.This will immediately boost your chances of getting the interview and getting a job offer from the interview.Overcoming Age Discrimination in a Job Search Quick InstructionsAvoid putting graduation year on job applications and resume/CVLimit experience to a maximum of 15-20 years on your resume/CVFocus on the aspects of the job interview that you can control your interview answers, your preparation, etc.Apply to companies who already employ people in their 40s and 50s (check LinkedIn)Apply for a high volume of positions. Applying for one or two positions per day is not enough to get hired quicklyUse your network as much as possible to secure more interviews. This decision will allow you to travel more and learn more. (Yes, I said learn more.) And taking easy classes wont affect your career in any way. Still need convincing? Read on. Travel More When Studying Abroad Have you ever had to turn down a fun night out to study? Now imagine turning down a trip to Paris or Rome to stay at home with your school books. Sounds ridiculous, right? Well, that is exactly what you may encounter while living abroad. Taking easy classes will allow you to have more free time, and if there is one time when you will appreciate those extra hours, it is while living abroad. Taking classes that require little study time (an American film class or a beginner language course) will allow you to plan trips in advance without worrying about a looming mid-term. Employers and friends alike will want to hear stories about your time abroad, so make sure you dont waste this opportunity. Go out and travel. Frequent the local haunts and meet people. Improve your language skills. See what it is like to be a citizen of that country. When it is all said and done, you will still make a splash in the job market. So Im always on the lookout for what it really means to be nice, and lately I have been noticing people who are getting to the top of their field by taking nice very seriously: They make it part of their job to figure out ways to be nice. Being nice means going out of your way to do the unexpected. If you are nice in an expected way, it is common decency. If you are nice in an unexpected way, people notice. This seems fair because to be nice in an unexpected way actually takes a good deal of thought. You have to be very aware of what other people are feeling in order to come up with something customized for them. For example, a local reporter was trying to hit on an intern, and Barak Obamas speech cut into the reporters plans. The reporter wrote about it, and Obama called him on the phone and said, Id like to publicly apologize for messing up your game Its a fun phone call to listen to because its so surprising. Being nice is apologizing any time it might make someone feel better, instead of just when you would look terrible not to apologize. Another example is a popular video blog, lonelygirl15, which looks like a girl in her bedroom posting on YouTube, but it is really an actress in a movie made to look like a girl in a bedroom. The producers of this groundbreaking movie were so conscious of the need to be nice to the audience in order to forge a connection, that Wired reports, they hired someone whose full-time job was to answer peoples emails and comments on YouTube. What is remarkable about the lonelygirl15 example is that the person answering the email had to pretend to be lonelygirl without misleading people. So she didnt talk about herself. She asked people questions about themselves, and she looked up their pages on MySpace and asked them questions. This drives home the point that when youre thinking about how to be nice, remember that its not about you, its about other people.

HeStumbled one of my posts and I have seenhuge traffic on my blog, and that isincredibly valuable to me. Twitter works the same way. The people I follow, I follow because they share great info or develop great info. At least in my opinion. I learn from them. While I do Tweet my own info and content, it is rewarding to be recognized by having anything I Tweet re-tweeted. Comments on blogs mean people are reading. If they are reading and commenting, that means they are listening. Most ofthe popular bloggers regularly share links. Theyturnover the spot light to others and create an awareness. In that vein, I want toshine the spot light on several Rochester bloggers who are helping the Rochester community.
